Rocketship Education’s unique gift to low-income communities
Rocketship Education was established in 2006 as a countrywide, not for profit organization serving those who lack access to good schools in low-income communities. The public system of elementary charter seeks to eliminate the attainment gap by encouraging under served communities to excel through offering a sustainable and scalable school model. Rocketship Education is based in San Jose, California and maintains that each child ought to have an excellent education.
Rocketship Education offers an instructional model with a technology supported approach that personalizes the teaching with the right content and method of instruction. The model also involves parents in their education, thereby making them advocates for their children.
Rocketship Education uses various products to teach their students in an individualized learning environment. They use Accelerated Reader 360 for a reading comprehension program with the ability to monitor and manage elementary tests. They also utilize Dreambox learning; which is a K-8 Math games product with the ability to adapt to a student’s level of knowledge. Other math programs include ST Math, i-Ready, TenMarks Math and Equatia. The programs have the potential to increase Math fact fluency, provide lesson plan and assessment for the students.
Rocketship Education has 11 schools that it manages in Nashville, Milwaukee, and California a number that is bound to increase in the coming years. The charter managed organization is headed by Preston Smith who acts as the CEO. The Rocketship Public school’s mission is to realize the capability of its students by discovering and developing their potential. Most of the students in the program get access to free lunch. For 75% of them, English is spoken as a second tongue. Rocketship holds the belief that all children ought to attend college and preparation for it must begin in Kindergarten.
